With Carnival suspending operations until February 2021, Mardi Gras will be among the early few cruise ships to begin sailings from Florida. She’ll debut on February 6 out of Port Canaveral Carnival Cruise Line's first Mardi Gras, the 'Fun Ship' party, started nearly 50 years ago. Today, a newly built Mardi Gras is the flagship of the fleet and the life of the party. Along the way, a Mardi Gras is an Excellence-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line.She is Carnival's lead vessel of the fleet's Excel-class, a subclass of the Excellence class, and was built by Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku in Turku, Finland. In 2021, Carnival will debut the new Mardi Gras, the largest ship in the fleet.It will feature BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, as well as a variety of new dining and bar venues. Three vessels have been named Mardi Gras: Mardi Gras (1972), launched in 1960 as the liner Empress of Canada she was renamed on entering service with Carnival Cruise Line as a cruise ship in 1972.
