Looking at NCL breakaway vs Carnival Mardi Gras for an Eastern Caribbean. NCL has better dates and is cheaper. Carnival seems to have better food and maybe a more appealing ship overall. It was renovated in 2019. It's 6 years older than the Mardi Gras, which was built in 2021. The Mardi Gras pays homage to Carnival's first ship, also named the Mardi Gras. It has two unique zones not found on its sister ships: The French Quarter, a New Orleans-themed area, and La Piazza, which is dedicated to the Italian heritage of Carnival cabins. Carnival is going to Amber Cove, San Juan, and St. Thomas We are leaning towards NCL especially since it is sailing out of Orlando whereas the Mardi Gras is sailing out of Miami. We live in GA so the 3 hour difference in the two ports is a factor as well. The Norwegian Breakaway has a total of 4 pools and 10 hot tubs. 1 of the pools and 4 of the hot tubs are exclusive access, which means there's either an extra charge to access them or you need to book a certain class of cabin to have access to them. Carnival Mardi Gras has more pools than the Breakaway and fewer hot tubs. The Carnival Celebration has about the same number of dining options as the Norwegian Breakaway. If you're looking to avoid extra money while on board, the Celebration might be a better choice then the Breakaway. More of the dining options are included in the base cruise fare, potentially saving you money. Even Mardi Gras is only 600 / 900 for a balcony in October on a seven day cruise, that's just absolutely insane for a brand new ship. In comparison, 15 years ago I paid $750 for a balcony on Carnival Victory. The Carnival Mardi Gras and Norwegian Joy both have 16 bars to choose from during your sailing. The Mardi Gras has 16 bars like Alchemy Bar, Java Blue Cafe and Punchliner Comedy Club. On Mardi Gras, you can grab a drink at 16 different bars such as Mixx Bar, Spice H2O and The Local Bar. The Norwegian Breakaway and Carnival Celebration both have 17 bars to choose from during your sailing. The Breakaway has 17 bars like Headliners Comedy Club, Shakers Martini & Cocktail Bar and Syd Norman's Pourhouse. On Breakaway, you can grab a drink at 17 different bars such as Golden Jubilee, Limelight Lounge and Serenity Pool Bar.
