The second weekend of Galveston Mardi Gras (Feb. 9-10) was the party weekend. Friday began with the San Luis Salute, a huge party thrown by Galveston native Tilman Fertitta (current owner of the Houston Rockets). At the pre-party, the duchesses and a few exclusive guests were treated to a performance by synchronized swimmers, cocktails served Galveston's Mardi Gras began with the beauty of 25 stunning duchesses — and quickly morphed into its late-night party ways. Lightweights should stay away. Every year, about 25 girls from Houston and Galveston are named duchesses of the Knights of Momus, a male-only organization supporting the social and civic efforts of Galveston’s Mardi Gras – the carnival preceding Lent. Duchesses are typically daughters or granddaughters of male members of the group and are selected by nominees to the Mardi Gras! Galveston is delighted to announce the distinguished recipients of the prestigious George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras Award: Mike Doherty and Kenneth Shelton. These two lifelong residents of Galveston Island will be honored at an awards ceremony on Friday, February 21, 5:30 PM, as part of the kick-off to Mardi Gras festivities. Libbie and Bill are both lifelong residents of Galveston Island and have been active in Mardi Gras Galveston Island since its revival. Bill is a charter member of the Krewe of the Knights of Momus and Libbie was Queen of the Knights of Momus in 1987 as Momus traveled the "Caribbean Seas". She represented the Duchess of all bougainvilleas. In 2018, I had the opportunity to be presented as a Knights of Momus Duchess.This year, I got to watch my sister, Holly, experience being presented as a 2020 KOM Duchess.
