Z Krewe began in 1994 as a group of 10 zany friends who wanted a uniquely different Mardi Gras Galveston organization. Today, Z Krewe has grown to 150 members and is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to perpetuating the spirit of Mardi Gras all year long. One of over 20 parades to enjoy during Mardi Gras! Galveston, The Z Krewe Z Parade takes place in the Downtown Entertainment District on Saturday, March 1 @ 1pm. The parade features bands, military units and zany revelers from multiple clubs, and is led by Big Daddy and Big Momma, followed by King and Queen Zanie and their royal Zoots and Zaftigs. The all-Krewe parade features marching bands, dance teams, and an all-out celebration for the final hours of Mardi Gras Galveston 2025. The parade begins at 28th Street and Market Street downtown, then heads south down 28th Street, then turns right down Postoffice Street, continuing toward the Strand historic district. Galveston parades starting on Friday, Feb. 21, and ending on Mardi Gras night, March 4. At 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 21, prior to the start of the George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras Parade in The Strand District, Mardi Gras! Galveston organizers will present Tutu Live Krewe with the Newe Krewe Award at the Tremont House. This krewe was founded in March 1985, making it the second-oldest Mardi Gras social organization in Galveston. 1 p.m. — 14th Annual Zaniest Golf Cart Parade This event started in 2011 and Mardi Gras! Galveston is the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the country and has a long history of festivities. The first celebration in Galveston was held in 1867, complete with a masked ball and Shakespearean reenactments! In 1871, two rival Mardi Gras societies, or “Krewes” were created. Krewe Babalu is the “every man’s Mardi Gras Krewe” founded in 1995 by Guy Taylor with the purpose of promoting Mardi Gras festivities on Galveston Island and promoting civic and social activities within the organization and the city of Galveston.
