The Krewe of Hera ball kicks off the formal Mardi Gras season Saturday at Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. Unlike the jammed 2024 season, the 2025 Mardi Gras calendar gives local krewes five weeks of pre-carnival celebrations. This year’s Mardi Gras is Tuesday, March 4. The latest possible date for Mardi Gras is March 8. The Krewe of Hera is a women-only club established in 1985 by our founding Captain, Mrs. Sally Romero. Sally and the other founding members created a Krewe that would incorporate many of the centuries-old New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions, and we continue utilizing those traditions in our formal Bal Masque Tableau today. The first ball in the Tri-City area will be held Saturday by the newest area women’s krewe, Hera, kicking off the season on Twelfth Night. Seven more balls will follow leading up to Fat Tuesday. Seven area Mardi Gras parades will be held in the Tri-City area beginning Feb. 9 and ending on Mardi Gras day. Only 1.5 hours from New Orleans and Baton Rouge and 1.25 hours from Lafayette, Mardi Gras on the Cajun Coast is family fun. Mardi Gras season began on Jan. 6, Twelfth Night, and area krewes have announced plans for this year. No balls were held in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. New to this year’s lineup will be the women’s Krewe of Hera. Hera will take the lead with the first ball on Saturday and will introduce a second local nighttime parade on Lundi Gras. Early Mardi Gras Balls . Mardi Gras balls have been around since Louisiana was a French colony. Just as we do today, Creole society kicked off the season on Twelfth Night with the King’s Ball (the Bal de Roi). The highlight of the evening was the cutting of the King Cake (the Gateau des Rois).
