Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a time for no-holds-barred celebration — but the holiday also sparks fears over crime and fatalities, considering past years’ deaths. Each spring, over 1 million visitors flock to New Orleans for Carnival, more than quadrupling the city’s population in a manner of days. Last year 68 percent of the Mardi Gras holiday deaths occurred in alcohol-involved crashes–well above the annual state average of 48 percent alcohol involvement in fatal crashes. Currently, there are 77 mystic societies in Mobile with hundreds more within Mardi Gras, also known as Carnival, is a festive season that occurs before the start of Lent.
