The Tulane/college girls go all out with rave-type outfits planned months in advance (think Alix Earle’s Mardi Gras outfits from last year). It was cold last year and I wore a giraffe onesie to one of the parades. Credit / debit card systems have a tendency to go down during Mardi Gras. ATMs will run out of cash. Cell service is usually very hit-and-miss. Wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty. Plan on throwing away or burning your shoes after Mardi Gras is over. Account for the fact that during Mardi Gras the weather can be cool and wet. The weekend before Mardi Gras all the action is on this route, but Lundi and Mardi Gras most of the action is downtown. Go to mardi gras and catch the good stuff, see the magnificent floats, and enjoy some red beans at fat Harry's. If you have heard of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you have likely heard that it is a racously good time. For all except food service/ hospitality employees. For them, it is a month of hellacious work. If you are unaware, 'Carnival Season' begins at Twelfth Night/King's Day - the sixth of January. This continues for 40 godforsaken days. We eventually realized the best time to enjoy Mardi Gras was during the day. However, if you like the balls to the wall insane crazy party scene, it's all about going out at night. I enjoyed New Orleans, and Mardi Gras was fun, but if I ever go back, I'll probably skip Mardi Gras. Gotta disagree here. Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras Day are the best time to visit Bourbon -- great costumes, lots of people having fun, etc. It usually isn't shoulder to shoulder those days except maybe at night, and in certain 1/2 block areas. It’s the Sunday before Mardi Gras and it’s by far the most fun day. Def the downtown parades for leading up to Fat Tuesday - Saturday, Joe Cain day, Lundi Gras, then Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras Day will vary greatly for locals. Some do big parades, some do neighborhood things and some do neighborhood parades that end up in the 1/4. But it's the last day of festivities that begin every year on January 6th. For me, Mardi Gras Day is about the costumes, rolling into the 1/4 with the neighborhood. If you're big on costuming Monday (Lundi Gras) day: Red Beans/Dead Beans/Green Beans Tuesday (Mardi Gras): Zulu Mardi Gras day starts early. Zulu rolls at 8am. So if ya roll outta bed hungover around 2pm you’ll have missed much of the fun so plan a lighter Monday night if you want the full Mardi Gras day experience.
