Mardi Gras vs Carnival. Mardi Gras, which means “Fat Tuesday” in French, is a one-day celebration that takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Carnival is a longer and more elaborate celebration that can last for several days or even weeks, depending on the location and begins on or around the Epiphany.
