Mardi Gras is a festive occasion that is celebrated in many parts of the world, but what many people don’t realize is that the ‘s’ is actually silent in the name of the holiday. This can be confusing for those who are unfamiliar with the French language, as the spelling would suggest that the ‘s’ should be pronounced. Yes, the s in Mardi Gras *is* silent. And, as I live in Mobile, Alabama, I was so glad to see that you were correct in which city Mardi Gras began--- Mobile, Alabama, *not* New Orleans! The First Mardi Gras in America Was in Mobile, Alabama – Established in 1703, Mobile’s celebrations predate New Orleans’ by more than a decade. The Longest-Running Parade – The Krewe of Rex has been parading since 1872, introducing many Mardi Gras staples, including the official colors: purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power).
