Parade-goers either have a love or hate relationship when it comes to Mardi Gras ladders, but they are a great way for your kids to experience parades. It’s a safe alternative for your child as it keeps them out of the crowd and from getting lost. However, it’s important to practice safety when using ladders on parade routes. Ladder-related accidents happen every Mardi Gras, so be sure to exercise caution. Ladders should be placed on level ground a safe distance from the curb — as many feed back as the ladder is high, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Chaining or roping ladders together or to public property (e.g., light standards, signposts and Mardi Gras ladders are a great way for kids to get the best view of Mardi Gras–and for the float riders to get the best view of the kids! As you might suspect, kids on ladders score the best throws, but there is a downside–ladders can be dangerous. 600 NOPD officers are being dedicated to Mardi Gras operations, along with 150 Louisiana state troopers.
