THE KREWE OF ROMANY. The Krewe of Romany is the longest reigning all-ladies Mardi Gras Krewe in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1949, nine imaginative and creative ladies formed the Krewe for the purpose of presenting an annual Mardi Gras Ball, with the court being the debutante daughters of its members. The Mardi Gras season officially kicked off this week on Twelfth Night, Jan. 6. The festivities continue until Fat Tuesday, which falls on March 4 this year. In 2008, the Prancing Babycakes started at the Baton Rouge Art Car Parade and expanded to Mardi Gras parades in 2009. Mayard joined one year later and has been a faithful member since. Membership in the Krewe of Tucumcari is by invitation only. Prospective applicants must complete an Application for Membership and be sponsored by a member in good standing. With its expanse of bright stars, Orion, the mythological hunter of the skies, is an apt representation of diversity in the carnival krewe that bears his name. The Krewe of Orion was founded in 1998 by two young men who had a love for the spirit of Mardi Gras and a desire to bring that spirit and tradition to Baton Rouge.
