Mardi Gras is more than just a day, or one week, or even a weekend. Starting January 6 (Twelfth Night), New Orleans has parades in the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras Day, which falls on March 4, 2025. Take a look at the parades below and click on each to learn more. The first ball was held in 1857 by the Mistick Krewe of Comus. Comus hosted the first parade, followed by Rex in 1872, which debuted the king of Mardi Gras. The Rex parade gave Mardi Gras the official colors of purple to represent justice, green to represent faith, and gold to represent power. The krewe's original parade route was designed to serve people who were unable to attend other parades in the city. The parade will head along Napoleon Avenue north until St. Charles Avenue, where the parade will turn east (right). The Krewe of Proteus will follow St. Charles all the way to Lee Circle, around the circle and back on St. Charles northward to Canal Street. A no parking on the parade route sign on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans is still covered in beads one week past Mardi Gras. Much of the Uptown route is still covered in Carnival debris Organized in 1917, the Krewe of Iris is the oldest and the largest female Carnival organization for women. Holding strong to the honored Mardi Gras traditions in its tableau ball and parade, Iris members always wear white gloves and masks, maintaining the "mystery" of the season. 2025 Mardi Gras Parade Schedule . Other krewe events during the year include ALLA's Coronation Dinner at Antoine's in June and the Krewe of ALLA Bash in January.
