Saturday, January 11 5:30 p.m. – second annual Saraland Mardi Gras tree lighting with the Krewe of Sparta will be held at Saraland Town Center Park (on the east side of U.S. 43, just north of Second Avenue). The Krewe of Phoenix (KOP) is an all-inclusive Mardi Gras Organization (LGBTQ) in Mobile, Alabama. The organization was established by nine founding members in January 2009, and the inaugural general meeting with charter members took place on March 22, 2009. Just hours before she died, Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone performed for the last time at a Mardi Gras ball in Mobile on Friday evening. Sparkling in a black suit, the 63-year-old singer “The Art and Design of Mardi Gras, ” organized in partnership with the History Museum of Mobile and the Mobile Carnival Museum, is open through May 3 at the Mobile Museum of Art, 4850 Museum Drive in West Mobile. A stunning display of all things Carnival and what’s required behind the scenes to make the magic happen. These designated Mardi Gras parking areas will be available on all parade days, opening two hours before the first parade and remaining staffed until 11 p.m. Security will be on-site after hours to ensure that those attending Mardi Gras balls or other events in the downtown area can access their vehicles after 11 p.m. on parade days.
