The broken column may have been meant as a symbol for the fallen Confederacy. Others claim it is a broken pillar of life. Using the bladder to strike his opponent, Folly chases Death, and always concludes the Mardi Gras Indians may be one of the most mysterious aspects of New Orleans Mardi Gras, particularly for visitors to the city. Tribes were formed by African American communities who were excluded from traditional parades and krewes, and they typically poke fun at krewe royalty and governing structures. In the earliest years, the KOR emblem float had folly dancing on a golden goblet between two crescent moons. In later years, the cup became a champagne glass. Walking through Mardi Gras World, I didn’t expect to find a connection to agriculture. I was there to learn how the Mardi Gras parade floats are designed and built.
