There will be plenty of parades around New Orleans for the last few days of the carnival season leading up to Mardi Gras on Tuesday March 4 2025 Carnival Parade Schedule. Saturday, February 1. Opelousas Imperial Mardi Gras Parade. March 4 at 11 a.m. Opelousas. Courir de Mardi 19 parades will roll across metro New Orleans this weekend as Mardi Gras 2025 kicks off Although some Carnival parades have already taken place, the official parading schedule begins Friday (Feb. 21). The first ball was held in 1857 by the Mistick Krewe of Comus. Comus hosted the first parade, followed by Rex in 1872, which debuted the king of Mardi Gras. The Rex parade gave Mardi Gras the official colors of purple to represent justice, green to represent faith, and gold to represent power. Parades, music, balls, costumes, and celebrations occur throughout the entire Carnival season, but Mardi Gras itself is technically the final day, Fat Tuesday. The History of Mardi Gras While the origins of Mardi Gras can be traced all the way back to Medieval Europe, the tradition of Mardi Gras in New Orleans began in the early 1700s when The 2006 New Orleans Carnival schedule included the Krewe du Vieux on its traditional route through Marigny and the French Quarter on February 11, the Saturday two weekends before Mardi Gras. There were several parades on Saturday, February 18, and Sunday the 19th a week before Mardi Gras. More than 450 riders will celebrate with the theme, "This and Dat." Float titles include Red Beans and Rice with Abita Roasting, Crawfish and Beer with St John's Fools of Misrule, and Lady and the Tramp with Southern Hotel.
