MEET THE CEREMONY. We kick off a new ship’s career with a naming ceremony and ours are one part tradition and a lotta parts fun! On the tradition end, we get dignitaries like Mardi Gras' godmother, Miss Dominican Republic Kimberly Jiménez, and our own Chief Fun Officer Shaq to help make sure the champagne bottle gets broken just right for good luck. Carnival Celebration holds about the same number of passengers as the Mardi Gras based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you look at the "Space Ratio," or tons of ship compared to number of passengers, the Celebration has the same amount of space per person as the Mardi Gras. Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras are the newest and biggest ships in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Both Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras are in the Excel class, with Carnival Jubilee joining them in December 2023.Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras offer more fun than ever before; after all, that is part of their brand! The Excel class of ships are 40% larger than all the other Emeril's on Celebration has more and nicer seating, menu is the same. I like the specialty bar menus (Latitudes and Golden Jubilee) on Celebration a tiny bit better than two of them on Mardi Gras (Brass Magnolia and Fortune Teller). So here’s a brand-new ship with a familiar name. With this Mardi Gras ® we aren't just paying homage to our first ship — in cruising circles this name suggests innovation, signals the start of something big. Oh, and this Mardi Gras still shouts “fun!” at the top of its lungs. Just a bit of trivia. The 1397 for Emeril's Bistro stands for the 'Yard Number' at the Meyer Turku Shipyard where the Celebration is being built. Same for the Mardi Gras Emeril's Bistro 1396. When Mardi Gras was being constructed at Meyer Turku, the ship was in Yard Number 1396. You can see Meyer Turku ships & yard #'s here: I have been on both the Celebration and the Mardi Gras. They are basically identical minus some of the theme areas. The Mardi Gras has a New Orleans/Mardi Gras theme while the Celebration is Miami/Art Deco. The biggest difference in venues is two of the bars on deck six. They have different themes and drinks on the two ships. We were on Mardi Gras in Aug. of 2021 and April of 2022 and absolutely loved it both times. We were just on Celebration earlier this month, and we definitely felt like the crew just was not in sync yet - there was lots of confusion, service was slow, the crew just seemed stressed out and tired.
