The Krewe of Athena Carnival Club, Inc. is an all-female Mardi Gras club in the Greater New Orleans area. Spearheaded by a group of Mardi Gras veterans, Krewe of Athena was born out of the desire to create a Mardi Gras organization open to professional women from diverse backgrounds. In 1935 a select group of noble gentlemen, many of whom were Captains of their own Mardi Gras clubs, sought to present an Elite Court and spirited Krewe of Merry Revelers to the city of New Orleans. The small company of members came to be known as somewhat of a “Captain’s Club,” given the background of many of its leaders. The Krewe of Athena Carnival Club, Inc. is an all-female Mardi Gras club in Greater New Orleans. Founded in 2014, the club is named after the Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts and skill. The Krewe of Athena Carnival Club, Inc. is an all-female Mardi Gras club in the Greater New Orleans area. Before then, the parade could only travel through “back streets” in African American neighborhoods. Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, which takes place March 4, marks the party’s climax and the end of Carnival Season on the Gulf Coast.
