The weekend before Mardi Gras all the action is on this route, but Lundi and Mardi Gras most of the action is downtown. Uptown parades (the ones on St. Charles) are the ones with the big elaborate floats that throw all the beads, downtown parades (usually start in the Marigny but go through parts of the French Quarter, Treme and Bywater) are Monday (Lundi Gras) day: Red Beans/Dead Beans/Green Beans Tuesday (Mardi Gras): Zulu Mardi Gras day starts early. Zulu rolls at 8am. So if ya roll outta bed hungover around 2pm you’ll have missed much of the fun so plan a lighter Monday night if you want the full Mardi Gras day experience. Well, the Mardi Gras and the Celebration are the largest ships in the fleet. We cruised the Celebration on a full ship in August. We learned the first show night that we need to get to Center Stage early for a seat. So we adjusted that for the future and it worked out. Carnival Veterans Go Long, Not Hard. Given that Mardi Gras is the culmination of a month-long party, any skillful local will avoid drinking the whole keg in a single night. Contrary to popular belief, Mardi Gras is so much more than just a boozy party on Bourbon Street. As a four-year Mardi Gras veteran (Roll Wave!) I was thinking of arriving on Saturday (March 2) and staying until the following Thursday or Friday. I've been in a balcony on Mardi Gras and had the same issue - I hit my legs on the bed trying to get around all the time. The bathrooms are also smaller, which means if you are larger in size, or taller, using the toilet can actually be an issue. Don't book the Mardi Gras, Celebration, Jubilee, or the two new Excel class ships. Mardi Gras Day will vary greatly for locals. Some do big parades, some do neighborhood things and some do neighborhood parades that end up in the 1/4. But it's the last day of festivities that begin every year on January 6th. For me, Mardi Gras Day is about the costumes, rolling into the 1/4 with the neighborhood. If you're big on costuming I have been on both the Celebration and the Mardi Gras. They are basically identical minus some of the theme areas. The Mardi Gras has a New Orleans/Mardi Gras theme while the Celebration is Miami/Art Deco. The biggest difference in venues is two of the bars on deck six. They have different themes and drinks on the two ships.
