And watching the kids in the floats is great fun. Building the float? Not so much. Discover Where Magic Is Made. Kern Studios was founded in 1932 as a float building company for New Orleans’ Mardi Gras parades. Since then, Kern Studios has expanded across all areas of specialty fabrication and creative theming. Mardi Gras World. Mardi Gras World is in a large warehouse where the floats are designed and built. In the front of the building is a gift shop where you can buy a ticket to get a behind the scenes tour of the work that is being done to build the floats. Although it was impressive to see the finished products of many of the props from previous Mardi Gras is not just a season for the crew at Mirth Artists LLC. It’s a year-long reality. “Our only time off is when our floats are rolling down the street,” says Ben Kaiser, Mirth Artists’ CEO. Kaiser credits most of his Mardi Gras experience growing up to marching in the Alma Bryant High School band during the parades. Kern Studios, the world leader in float creation, has been a part of Mardi Gras history since 1932. Now the family-owned and operated business designs and builds floats for festivals and celebrations all over the world. Float building is where we got our start more than 60 years ago, so let us share some of our tricks of the trade. Participants in our team building activity have the opportunity to tour our float-building warehouse and work with colleagues to create a mini float of their own. The early days of what has grown into Kern Studios started with Roy Kern, a local artist-turned-sign-painter who worked his way through the Depression by painting names and signs on the bows of freighters and barges. A sports theme or Christmas float will not fit in well at a Mardi Gras parade. Be realistic in the scope of your project.
