The Krewe of House Floats (KoHF) was born from the combined creativity of local home- and business-owners, local float makers and artists, and their collective desire to keep one of New Orleans’ most-beloved traditions alive - and COVID-safe - and to Mardi Gras house floats are back. How did the pandemic activity become a city tradition? The house float phenomenon started at the height of the pandemic, when New Orleans was still adapting The house float phenomenon began in 2020, when Mardi Gras parades were canceled due to the pandemic. Determined not to let the season pass quietly, New Orleanians transformed their homes into elaborate floats, bringing the festive spirit to neighborhoods citywide. The official Krewe of Houses has released a comprehensive map that shows the locations of dozens of decorated house floats across the United States. Mardi Gras 2021:Houses are the new parade House Floats were born out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eloquent decorations made by Mardi Gras artists adorned homes when floats could not roll in the streets of New Orleans. As Mardi Gras approached, they shifted their focus to supporting artists and craftsmen who would normally be preparing for parades. Inspired by artist Caroline Thomas, the “Hire a Mardi Gras Artist” project was born. Through donations and a lottery system, the Krewe raised funds to transform houses into vibrant Mardi Gras floats. Forty-five Mardi Gras artists and installation carpenters have been employed to work on 21 sites—“an entire parade” worth of floats, Thomas says—due to be completed by the week before the Float Houses 2022 from Mardi Gras New Orleans.
