Mardi Gras Balls. Mardi Gras balls are an extremely important part of LGBTQ Mardi Gras celebrations. They are typically themed and feature dazzling handmade costumes and presentations of krewe royalty. Here are some of the best-known gay Carnival balls. Check the krewes’ websites for details on how to participate. Many people believe that Mardi Gras is a single day of celebration. Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday” is actually the climax for the Carnival season. Formal Gay Balls and walking parades begin on the twelfth night of Christmas (Kings Night – Jan 6th). Most of the larger balls begin a week or two before Fat Tuesday. Gay Mardi Gras Bead Toss. February 21, 2023. Every year, the Krewe of Queenateenas’ reigning King Cake King and Queen take to the balcony of the Ambush Mansion for a bead toss that will have the queer community leaping, grabbing and cheering. This is, quite literally, one of the crowning moments of Gay Mardi Gras. The founder of Osiris began fundraising efforts in 1981 with the intent to establish a strictly gay Mardi Gras association. The Order of Osiris has now grown over the years, changing with the times to become an all-inclusive Mardi Gras organization. Currently, the group has a variety of members ranging in age, gender, sexual orientation and race. The Krewe of Armeinius Founded in 1968, the Krewe of Armeinius is the largest Gay Mardi Gras organization in the city. Throughout the year, their mission is to educate the community and preserve the history and traditions of Gay Mardi Gras. Each year, they celebrate the organization’s mission and efforts with their annual Krewe of Armeinius Ball.
