I'll be visiting in the Quepos/Jaco area in the middle of February and I've been reading that there might have been some kind of Mardi Gras festival in Esterillos in the past, but I've yet to find a lot of details for the 2023 event. In mid-February Costa Rica hosts Mardi Gras in Esterillos which is a carnival with parades, street foods, music, children’s games and dancing. The CENAC Summer Festival is the 2nd week of February featuring storytelling, theater, movies, and other entertainment at the National Cultural Center in San Jose. Mardi Gras in Esterillos: Esterillos Oeste was home to the first Mardi Gras celebration on the west coast of Costa Rica. Fun for the whole family, the day kicks off at noon with a parade, games and face-painting for the kids, food vendors and live music. Official holidays in Costa Rica include: January 1 (New Year's Day), March 19 (St. Joseph's Day), Holy Thursday and Good Friday during Holy Week, April 11 (Juan Santamaría's Day), May 1 (Labor Day), July 25 (annexation of the province of Guanacaste), August 2 (Virgin of Los Angeles's Day), August 15 (Mother's Day), September 15 (Independence Day), October 12 (Discovery of America/Encuentro de About 2 1/2 hours drive from San Jose, San Isidro de General is a wonderful little city in the Valle General. It is about 35km from the beach (Dominical) and during the first week of February hosts an agricultural fair along with flower exhibitions, Costa Rica style bullfights, traditional food and dance, and livestock competitions.
