MEET THE CEREMONY. We kick off a new ship’s career with a naming ceremony and ours are one part tradition and a lotta parts fun! On the tradition end, we get dignitaries like Mardi Gras' godmother, Miss Dominican Republic Kimberly Jiménez, and our own Chief Fun Officer Shaq to help make sure the champagne bottle gets broken just right for good luck. Carnival Mardi Gras rooms are more thoughtful in terms of design and storage than other Carnival ships. Unsurprisingly, balcony rooms and Ocean Suites are popular for their views of the sea. With a maiden voyage scheduled for summer 2020, Mardi Gras will be Carnival’s newest and largest-ever ship. As a nod to the first ship in Carnival’s fleet back in 1971, also named Mardi Gras, this ship honors the 50 years of service for Carnival Cruise Line. If you think you’ve got the layout of Carnival ships memorized, scratch everything you know because things are new on Mardi Gras – and I mean that in a good way. Until the Mardi Gras joins the fleet, the largest ship in the Carnival lineup is the new Carnival Panorama. The Vista-class ship comes in at nearly 1,060 feet, carries 4,000 passengers at double occupancy, and has a gross tonnage of almost 134,000 tons. The Navy ship, whose motto is "Courage, Honor, Sacrifice" is the 2025 Mardi Gras ship for Mobile.
