Every year, Mardi Gras season begins on Twelfth Night, which is January 6. Twelfth Night represents the Christian holy day of the Epiphany. Carnival celebrations begin on "Twelfth Night," also known as the Epiphany, which falls on Monday The French phrase “Mardi Gras” translates to “Fat Tuesday,” but the excitement begins on January 6th, known as Twelfth Night. The most important parades light up the week before. Massive krewes like Endymion and Bacchus roll out on Saturday and Sunday. Carnival season kicks off on January 6—also known as King’s Day, Epiphany and Twelfth Night—and runs through Mardi Gras, which is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday Over time, the festivities evolved into Mardi Gras as we know it today. The first Mardi Gras parade was held in New Orleans by the Krewe of Comus in 1857, and in 1870, Mardi Gras’ second Krewe, the Twelfth Night Revelers, began tossing “throws” (more on these iconic parts of Mardi Gras later). For the biggest parades rolling in the evenings on the weekend before Mardi Gras, plan to get there about four hours ahead of time to get yourself a great spot. Mitchell Mardi Gras Award Presentation, this is the first parade to Kick Off Mardi Gras Galveston 2025! This parade is packed with marching bands, dancing squads & tons of energy.
