Cold rain didn’t stop the festivities during last week’s Krewe of Krewes Parade, hosted by the Greater Orange Chamber of Commerce. Long a Mardi Gras tradition in Texas, the King Cake is baked from a rich dough and filled with cream cheese, cinnamon, chocolate, or other sweets. It is topped with a glaze and sprinkles in the Mardi Gras colors or gold, green, and purple. There might also be some beads to adorn the cake! There are nine parades on Mardi Gras, most notably Rex. • Rex (don’t say “king of”; it’s redundant) – always a prominent New Orleans businessman – is considered the king of Mardi Gras. (You should, therefore, sneer when you hear some Hollywood matinee idol announce to Jay Leno that he will be “king of the Mardi Gras.” He won’t.) Planning for next year’s Mardi Gras fun has already begun following a successful parade in Orange that included 20 entries of big floats and vehicles. Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce President Ida Schossow said there are almost 500 people in the krewe, which helped make it a success. “The floats were packed,” she said.
