The Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association (formerly named the Colored Carnival Association) was founded in 1939. The Mobile Carnival Association, Mobile’s earliest Mardi Gras organization, dates back to the mid-1800s and was reformed in 1893. Each group chooses its own monarchy and court. Even earlier examples exist. But hope and gaiety were soon revived in 1866 by a Mobilian named Joseph Stillwell Cain. Joe Cain revived Mardi Gras and mysticism. Carnival is deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of the city. Today, there are over 80 mystic societies in Mobile, with more than 38 of them parading during the 2 ½ weeks leading up to Mardi Gras Day. Organized in 1950, The Etruscans is the oldest Husband and Wife Mystic Society in the Mobile area. Our Annual Ball is held on a Saturday night, four weeks prior to to Mardi Gras. We are a non parading couples’ organization, but instead focus on providing one of the best Mardi Gras Mystic Balls in Mobile, Alabama. The Krewe of Phoenix (KOP) is an all-inclusive Mardi Gras Organization (LGBTQ) in Mobile, Alabama. The organization was established by nine founding members in January 2009, and the inaugural general meeting with charter members took place on March 22, 2009. The only ladies organization that parades on Mardi Gras Day, the krewe will kick off Fat Tuesday parades with the theme "I'll Drink to That." The 61st parade will include the OOA Theme float, the The founder of Osiris began fundraising efforts in 1981 with the intent to establish a strictly gay Mardi Gras association. The Order of Osiris has now grown over the years, changing with the times to become an all-inclusive Mardi Gras organization. Currently, the group has a variety of members ranging in age, gender, sexual orientation and race. As the story goes, a group of friends, while playing their regular poker game, started discussing forming a new Mardi Gras group. One day, in the old Azalea Grill, that group bumped into a group of men who were members of another parading organization but were disenchanted with that organization. Together, they formed the MOT. The Krewe of Phoenix (K.O.P.) is an all-inclusive, alternative Mardi Gras Organization in Mobile, Alabama. We have nine founding members who started the organization in January 2009. Our first general meeting with charter members was held March 22, 2009. Our main objective is to give viable support to the community. The Krewe was organized in March of 1985 and is the second oldest Mardi Gras Social Organization since its revival in 1985. The 65 unit parade features 12 Aquarius double-decker floats, 15 marching bands, dance teams, and numerous other floats and walking units. Mardi Gras parades will start rolling through the streets of downtown Mobile on Feb. 14 with the Conde Cavaliers. Most Mardi Gras organizations have balls that go along with the theme of their parade.
