2012 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Lead-up to Mardi Gras. The Stonewall riots that began in the early hours of 28 June 1969 in New York City were the result of a police raid on a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn. The violence, unrest and resistance of the Sydney Mardi Gras of 1978 has clear parallels to Stonewall. The first Mardi Gras is often described as a riot but I didn’t see it that way.
