A: Casino Night: Spurs and Spades is an annual themed and costume event that the Activities Committee from USUSA plans each February. It was formally known as Mardi Gras. This year it will feature a Casino, Dance, Soda Lounge, Tattoos, Karaoke, Photo Booths, silent dance party and more! Mardi Gras, translated from French to Fat Tuesday, started as a celebration before the Christian Lent. During Lent, many Christians prepare spiritually before Easter via fasting, repentance and other forms of spiritual discipline. In the past, many of USU’s Mardi Gras parties have been in January, a month before the actual celebration, and The USU acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, upon whose stolen land which we operate, gather as employees and live. We recognise this land was never terra nullius — the land belonging to these peoples was never ceded, given up, bought or sold. This year’s Mardi Gras will be on Feb. 4 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Masks are encouraged and will be available to people as they enter the event. Tickets will be sold to everyone, but USU students can pick up tickets for $5 at the card office in the Taggart Student Center.
