The Krewe of Rex chose these colors in 1872 in part to honor the Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanov, who visited New Orleans during that year’s carnival season. The krewe asked the people of New Orleans to display the colors, which represent justice (purple), faith (green) and power (gold), on Mardi Gras. Regardless of background, Mardi Gras allows people to set aside their differences and join in the fun. The sense of togetherness is one of the key reasons why Mardi Gras has become such an enduring and beloved tradition. A Time for Joy and Indulgence. At its heart, Mardi Gras is a celebration of joy and indulgence. Mardi Gras is traditionally celebrated on “Fat Tuesday,” the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. In many areas, however, Mardi Gras has evolved into a week-long festival. The time of year was synonymous with the soon-to-be spoils of spring, so it was worth celebrating the riches to come with some debauchery. Iberville, Bienville, and their men celebrated it as part of an observance of Catholic practice. The date of the first celebration of the festivities in New Orleans is unknown. Marginalized groups would often gather in the maroon settlements and designated areas of the city, such as Congo Square, to celebrate Mardi Gras and other events from which they had been excluded. The very first American Mardi Gras celebration took place in March 1699 after two French settlers landed near present-day New Orleans and brought their traditions with them. The French colonists who followed over the proceeding decades introduced the "Galette des Rois," or king cake, which is how it became a New Orleanian symbol. While people of color initially participated in the masked balls held to celebrate Mardi Gras, the Spanish, who assumed control of Louisiana in 1762, pushed to exclude them from the festivities as Mardi Gras happens every year. 'Mardi Gras' is French, and it means 'Fat Tuesday. Individuals tend to consume rich foods during the festival. This is because they will fast throughout Lent.
