3 March 2025. Over the weekend, thousands came together to celebrate pride at the 47th edition of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. What began as a protest for LGBTQIA+ rights continues as an iconic pillar in the community as a platform for advocacy, connection, visibility, and celebration. The 47th annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade took over the streets of Sydney on Saturday night with rallying cries of LGBTQIA+ pride, protest and freedom. An estimated 200,000 spectators cheered from the sidelines as over 10,000 marchers across 180 floats took to the streets. The first Mardi Gras was a protest in 1978, coordinated in solidarity with other gay and lesbian groups around the world on the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots in the United States. Pride in Protest tried to have police banned from the parade but were narrowly voted down at the Mardi Gras AGM in December. “Our community is disappointed that there has been a loss, but we know it’s a question of when,” Pride in Protest leader Damien Nguyen told SBS News afterwards . As demonstrated at the annual general meeting, Pride in Protest appears to have more than 400 Mardi Gras members voting in favour of its motions, which is more than enough support (10 per cent) for calling a meeting at any time. As of June 30, there were 3761 Mardi Gras members. The protest stood in solidarity with Black Lives Matter movement.
