The Quebec Winter Carnival (French: Carnaval de Québec), commonly known in both English and French as Carnaval, is a pre-Lenten festival held in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. After being held intermittently since 1894, the Carnaval de Québec has been celebrated annually since 1955. [ 1 ] Carnaval de Quebec is the largest and most well-known Mardi Gras celebration in the province. The festival takes place over the course of two weeks, and features a range of activities for all ages. One of the most popular events is the Grande Parade , which sees costumed revelers marching through the streets of Quebec City. A bit of history The tradition of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has been around for a long time! In Quebec City, the world’s snow capital, the first major winter carnival made its debut in 1894. A population often faced with harsh winters decided to put on a snow festival to warm their hearts.
