But for 200 years, in the Treme neighborhood just outside the French Quarter, Mardi Gras Day conjures a different image all together.. At 5 a.m., The North Side Skull and Bone Gang leaves the Backstreet Cultural Museum and goes door to door, house to house, waking up the neighborhood and spreading a message of peace. To the uninitiated, the skeleton-masking North Side Skull and Bone Gang — representing, on the most basic level, death — might seem out of place on Mardi Gras. They’re not trying to be the prettiest anything or bond with revelers intent on indulging giddy fantasies at the greatest free show, in the city that care forgot. “For two centuries, the North Side Skull and Bone Gang has signaled the start of Mardi Gras Day, waking the spirits and serving as a reminder to live well before death.” According to Mardi Gras Traditions, the gang is a reminder that “Carnival, like death, is a great equalizer. And we also have the Northside Skull and Bones Group, which is a skeleton group. They are the first in Black Mardi Gras traditions to come out on Mardi Gras day.
