Three vessels have been named Mardi Gras: Mardi Gras (1972), launched in 1960 as the liner Empress of Canada she was renamed on entering service with Carnival Cruise Line as a cruise ship in 1972. She was sold to Epirotiki in 1993 and scrapped in 2003 after a number of changes of both owner and name; Mardi Gras (2006), a bulk carrier launched At the time, Miami wasn’t well suited for ‘large’ cruise ships, and Mardi Gras ran aground fully loaded while sailing out of port with 530 passengers and 200 crew on board, which led to some MEET THE CEREMONY. On the day after Mardi Gras, it seems like a good time to take a quick look back at Carnival’s very first ship. RMS Empress of Canada was an ocean liner built in 1961 by Vickers-Armstrongs, Walker-on-Tyne, England for Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. The attraction of brand-new cruise liners in the now rapidly expanding Carnival fleet could not dim the enduring popularity of the MARDI GRAS, and early in 1982, the aging ship was given an extensive refurbishment. Even by 1989, after seventeen years with Carnival, the MARDI GRAS was still recognizable as the former EMPRESS OF CANADA. Carnival Postcard of the Mardi Gras.
