What is a streetcar-riding New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe to do when there’s no streetcar? For most of the past five years, the Rampart Street line hasn't run. This downtown Carnival club has had According to the Phunny Phorty Phellows website, members of the satirical krewe take to the street in costume to “herald the arrival of carnival” by riding the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar The Funky Uptown Krewe rolls on a St. Charles Streetcar a few blocks behind the Phunny Phorty Phellows on Twelfth Night. In its first year, 2019, the krewe members tossed custom-made CDs featuring songs by New Orleans bands including Bonerama, The Hot 8 Brass Band and Cowboy Mouth. Crowds gather along the tracks to cheer, wave and catch the first beads of Mardi Gras. The Phellows first took to the streets in 1878 (with a long break that lasted from 1898 until 1981). Because humor and whimsy have been part of the Phunny Phorty tradition since way back, krewe members often dress in satiric costumes that reflect topical issues. ABOUT Twelfth Night is the traditional kick off of Carnival season, making these parades the first we enjoy of the year's festivities. In the spirit and tradition of multiple Mardi Gras krewes reveling on the same night, the Funky Uptown Krewe traditionally follows the original Heralds of Carnival, the Phunny Phorty Phellows, on the St. Charles streetcar line. The Krewe of Kings The Krewe of Kings (aka the Kings of Metry) is a Jefferson Parish Carnival Club, established in 2019. After a short hiatus due to Covid and the tragic passing of Co-Founder Mckinley “Mackie” J. Cantrell III, the krewe is returning to the Metairie parade route on Lundi Gras in 2025. Knights of Nemesis Les Mystérieuses held its second and final ball in 1900, but in the years since a number of all-women krewes have continued to revamp Carnival. In 1941 the Krewe of Venus made history as the first women’s krewe to hold a parade, but it was met with disdain by many bystanders, who threw rotten vegetables at the floats.
