"The Masks" is episode 145 of the American television series The Twilight Zone. It originally aired on March 20, 1964 on CBS . In this episode, set on Mardi Gras , a dying man coerces his relatives into wearing grotesque masks that reflect their true personalities. The Masks: Directed by Ida Lupino. In some ways, this story reminded me of another great TZ tale - 'Eye of the Beholder'. "The Twilight Zone" was the brainchild of Emmy Award-winner Rod Serling, who served as host and wrote over 80 episodes of the original show's 150-plus episode run. It's a strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy and superstition. Serling introduced each episode, and many of the black and white hours concluded with a surprise ending. While dying of old age, the wealthy Jason Foster (Robert Keith) hosts an unusual Mardi Gras party for his greedy relatives. Notably, family members Wilfred (Milton Selzer), Emily (Virginia Gregg), Paula (Brooke Hayward), and Wilfred Jr. (Alan Sues) are required to wear special masks throughout the evening—with a horrifying result. “The Masks” isn’t the scariest Twilight Zone episode, but there’s something about putting on a mask that makes it feel especially appropriate for Halloween — even if they are technically Mardi Gras masks. Wealthy Jason Foster is dying and he invites his greedy heirs to a Mardi Gras party where they must wear the masks he specially had made for them or else be I thought the setting of Mardi Gras and the fact that these supernatural masks were created by an “old Cajun” sets a wonderfully mysterious, folkoric tone for this episode.
