MARDI GRAS: FUN-FUELED VACATION INNOVATION POWERED BY LNG. When we launched our first ship, 1972's TSS Mardi Gras, we made cruising a lot less stuffy, a bit less fancy, the kind of fun everybody could enjoy. Nobody expected this ship to change the cruise world, but here we are! So here’s a brand-new ship with a familiar name. The 180,800-ton, 5,282-guest Mardi Gras is the first of Carnival's thrill-a-minute Mardi Gras class series. Innovative and exceptional, she is jam-packed with excitement for all ages! Many firsts include the introduction of a new-to-the-line suites-only enclave, six themed zones — each with unique venues for dining, entertainment and more. The original Mardi Gras ship was launched under a different name in 1960, before becoming a Carnival ship and gaining the Mardi Gras name in 1972. Carnival sold the ship in 1993, after which the Carnival pays homage to the line's very first ship, 1972's TSS Mardi Gras, with the innovative Carnival Mardi Gras! Named for the original ship that took Carnival to the seas, Carnival Mardi Gras is an XL-Class ship that accommodates over 6,500 passengers. This ship boasts the very first roller coaster at sea, named BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster. With a maiden voyage scheduled for summer 2020, Mardi Gras will be Carnival’s newest and largest-ever ship.
