Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday and popular cultural phenomenon that dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites. [3] Mardi Gras was celebrated in Roman Catholic communities in Europe and Latin America before it grew in America. Though the term refers to one specific day, Mardi Gras is not a single-day celebration. Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is the last day of feasting and celebration before Lent begins. The roots of Mardi Gras can be traced back to medieval Europe and the Catholic Church, which placed great emphasis on the observance of Lent. As a result of the excess and debauchery associated with the annual celebration of Lent, the 40 days of fasting and repentance leading up to Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday became a sidebar to the debauchery and excess associated with Mardi Gras. The first Mardi Gras throws were started by a krewe called the Twelfth Night Revelers in the early 1870s. After their Mardi Gras parade themed “Mother Goose’s Tea Party” a man wearing a Santa Claus suit handed out gifts to onlookers. Residents of New Orleans have been celebrating Mardi Gras since the 18th century" ("Mardi Gras," Encarta). Mardi Gras "is a lively, colorful [not to mention bawdy and debased] celebration held on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins," says the World Book Encyclopedia.
