There are plenty of parades in New Orleans in the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras on Feb. 13. The legacy of Mardi Gras can be traced to European Carnival celebrations during the 17th and 18th centuries. The holiday’s connection to New Orleans dates back to 1699, when explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville arrived in what is now Louisiana and declared a plot of land “Pointe du Mardi Gras” upon realizing it was the eve of the holiday. Depending on the Lenten season and ultimately the date of Easter, Mardi Gras can fall on any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. Uptown, the Zulu parade rolls first, with the Rex parade following immediately after. The Mardi Gras parade will start from Oxford Street in Darlinghurst at about 7pm on Saturday, moving through Flinders Street before finishing at Anzac Parade, Moore Park at about 11pm.
