Discover Where Magic Is Made. Kern Studios was founded in 1932 as a float building company for New Orleans’ Mardi Gras parades. Since then, Kern Studios has expanded across all areas of specialty fabrication and creative theming. “We build 500 to 600 floats annually,” says Barry Kern, president and CEO of Mardi Gras World. “The floats that most inspire me are the signature floats for New Orleans’ Krewes. Kern Studios is growing the business of Mardi Gras in New Orleans and beyond with the recent purchase of two vacant lots in Algiers where it plans to build two new float-building warehouses. Kern Studios, the world leader in float creation, has been a part of Mardi Gras history since 1932. Now the family-owned and operated business designs and builds floats for festivals and celebrations all over the world. For nearly 80 years, Kern Studios has been the premier float builder for the Mardi Gras carnival season, a New Orleans tradition that dates back to the 1700s. Building Mardi Gras parades is a year-round effort at Kern Studios. You can get a peek into the process at Mardi Gras World, our working warehouses that are open to the public. Mardi Gras World. In the front of the building is a gift shop where you can buy a ticket to get a behind the scenes tour of the work that is being done to build the floats. Mid-20th Century Innovations: From Papier-Mâché to Fiberglass. Fast forward to the mid-20th century, and we see a major shift in the materials used to build Mardi Gras floats.
