Mardi Gras definitely has the better itinerary, but I would personally pick the Oasis over the Mardi Gras in terms of the ship itself. As a disclaimer, I've only been on one of the Oasis' sister ships, the Symphony of the Seas, and haven't been on the new Carnival ships. All told, the top six largest cruise ships on the planet belong to Royal Caribbean. Carnival Celebration, Jubilee, and Mardi Gras, Carnival’s largest ships, have a gross tonnage of 183,000, or about 75% of the size of Royal’s largest ship. And this is just one example. When it comes to size, Royal Caribbean ships definitely have an edge. The itinerary of Mardi Gras is more appealing to me. Mardi Gras is a significantly newer vessel than Oasis of the Seas. Never sailed on Oasis of the Seas, but, I would expect, especially for Mardi Gras' first season, Carnival Cruise Lines will go "all out" to make their guests cruise experience the absolute best that it can possibly be. The Excel-class for Carnival and Oasis-class for Royal Caribbean have everything you could hope for in a cruise vacation: tons of activities, fun for all ages and a wide selection of dining, bars and entertainment onboard. Both the Excel-class and Oasis-class represent the biggest cruise ships from both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Both lines have mega-ships now that Carnival has the 180,000+ gross ton ships Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. These Excel-class ships offer a much different Carnival Here’s how Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas compared to Carnival’s Mardi Gras, along with some of my honest thoughts about each cruise experience. Ship Class Overview. Overall, Carnival’s Excel-class and Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships represent important new eras of ship design and technology for each respective cruise line. I did like the glass door shower compared to the previous curtain on older Carnival ships, but the bathroom was very narrow on Mardi Gras. Crowds: I think crowd management was better on Oasis vs Mardi Gras. It seemed like every spot of open deck space on Mardi Gras had a bar in it, which limited space and made it difficult to relax. Adult Area In my view, the key difference is that Royal Caribbean feels a bit more refined and offers a touch of upscale flair, whereas Carnival embraces a laid-back, party-friendly atmosphere. One isn’t necessarily better than the other; it’s all about whether you’re looking for whimsical caviar or a night-long Mardi Gras on the high seas.
