Mardi Gras Day will vary greatly for locals. Some do big parades, some do neighborhood things and some do neighborhood parades that end up in the 1/4. But it's the last day of festivities that begin every year on January 6th. For me, Mardi Gras Day is about the costumes, rolling into the 1/4 with the neighborhood. If you're big on costuming I am planning a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras this coming year! Fat Tuesday falls on my birthday, so planning on having a fun time! I need itinerary advice. But when we stayed there maybe 1-2 yrs back, the rooms were not nice at all, IMHO.
