In Greek mythology, Bacchus is the god of wine and vegetation—and they host a celebration fitting of its namesake god. The Krewe of Bacchus holds its parade on the Sunday before Mardi Gras Day, drawing crowds of several hundred thousands every year. Named after the god of wine and presenting a celebrity King, Bacchus brings fun and revelry to the streets of New Orleans. Over a million strings of beads will be thrown from the festive floats. Bacchus, the most innovative and imitated krewe founded during the 20th century, resulted from a meeting of twelve businessmen who gathered in 1968 to explore new directions for Carnival clubs in New Orleans. The largest floats ever assembled, the transformation of the tableau ball into massive supper dance with Las Vegas-style entertainment, and the choice of a national celebrity as its NEW ORLEANS — The 2025 Carnival season kicked off on January 6, and the Krewe of Bacchus is set to roll on Sunday, March 2, at 5:15 p.m. The parade starts at the corner of Napoleon Avenue and The Bacchus Rendezvous is integral to the city's annual Carnival festivities, hosted by the Krewe of Bacchus in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The Krewe of Bacchus is one of the most renowned Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans, known for its elaborate floats, celebrity monarchs, and a grand parade that ends inside their formal ball: the Mardi Gras balls used to be overwhelmingly private, but that all changed with the introduction of the Krewe of Bacchus in the late 1960s. Inspired by the Roman god of wine, the Krewe of Bacchus set out to both lift Mardi Gras from a mid-century slump and make Carnival a more accessible event for newcomers and tourists. The Bacchus Krewe, named after the Greek God Bacchus who ruled wine and plants, is the oldest krewe. Started by Edward Brennan Sr. in 1942 these super krewes were the first Mardi Gras balls that allowed tourists or those from outside of New Orleans into the balls. This oldest krewe is widely considered to throw the best Mardi Gras ball of all! Early Mardi Gras Balls . Mardi Gras balls have been around since Louisiana was a French colony. Just as we do today, Creole society kicked off the season on Twelfth Night with the King’s Ball (the Bal de Roi). The highlight of the evening was the cutting of the King Cake (the Gateau des Rois). The Algiers Mardi Gras Parade and Festival will be back on Saturday, February 1 at New Orleans Federal City in Algiers. Entertainment will include Brass-A-Holics, Amanda Shaw, The U.S. Marine Reserve Jazz Band and more. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and the Festival begins at 10 a.m. The three largest Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans are parades for the Krewes of Endymion, Bacchus and Muses.
