Every year, professional and amateur artists alike take their bead haul and turn it into unique works of art to enjoy year round. While you can take your surplus beads to recycling centers all around the city or donate to area schools, why not consider getting crafty with it yourself? New Orleans artist Anna Walton creates amazing Mardi Gras bead art in her Uptown apartment. Her designs include original small and large-scale bead art pieces and installations, all handmade from Mardi Gras beads on wood. The post-parade scene of unwanted Mardi Gras beads inspired artist artist John K. Lawson. He recalls a walk along St. Charles Avenue after a parade, “It was really a bright afternoon, and it just looked like this mosaic of color and beauty.” Lawson, a native of England, attended the Landscape Architecture School at LSU and never left I stand on the sidewalk side throughout the season, gathering materials to make my art in hopes of collecting a year’s worth until the next Mardi Gras rolls around.
