The museum is small & the tour is short, so it was perfect introduction to Mardi Gras. Carl Mack, the owner & operator of the Museum, is an entertainer, and has been in the business for many years. The tour was very reminiscent of a vaudeville act, with songs, jokes, and some information sprinkled in. The friendly and informative volunteer tour guides from the museum helped us understand the breadth of activity that goes into putting on a Mardi Gras celebration. The costumes worn by past royalty were stunning, and filled the warehouse-size room's walls and a large portion of the floor. Specialties: Featuring an amazing array of Carnival costumes that showcase the rich history of costuming in New Orleans, the museum explores the myriad of ways revelers participate in the celebration of Carnival Season and Mardi Gras. On exhibit are the regalia of Mardi Gras Kings and Queens, elaborately feathered and beaded Mardi Gras Indian suits, costumes from Carnival Krewe Tableau balls Mardi Gras World is an interesting place to visit because you will have an opportunity to learn about the float design process. Visitors watch a short film on the history of Mardi Gras. Once the film is over you can sample a slice of King Cake, try on some Mardi Gras attire, and then walk through the warehouse to see a variety of floats/props. We started our museum in 1997 and opened in 1998. we started with filling one classroon in the Historic Central School building. The building is now used as the Arts and Humanities cultural center. We now house and display over 250 costumes in six of the Splendid display of Mardi Gras costumes and an excellent overview of the historical underpinnings of the festival with informative displays spread out over several rooms.
