Every year on the Epiphany, January 6 th , many of us in New Orleans swap out the ornaments on our artificial Christmas trees and replace them with purple, green and gold Mardi Gras ornaments in the shape of masks, crowns, jesters, king cake babies and more. A day can easily be spent soaking up the views along St. Charles Avenue. Another oak tree-studded avenue with a rich history and connection to the city. Next to these emblems of the past resides a tree steeped in tradition – Tulane’s beloved Bead Tree, home to Mardi Gras beads thrown by students each year. Putting Down Roots. Tree roots spread through the soil and ground themselves in their surroundings, just as Tulane established itself in our plot of land in Uptown New Orleans. Tulane University announced that the beloved “bead tree” — a sizeable Nuttall oak tree covered in Mardi Gras beads that became a recognizable feature on campus — was removed from the Academic Quadrangle Tuesday. Lightening struck the tree a few years ago, and the tree was in danger of falling due to a termite infestation.
