The 63rd Annual Saddle Tramp Riders Club/Church Point Courir de Mardi Gras will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025. Our full day event is one fluid route, but is comprised of a traditional Courir de Mardi Gras (Country Route) (8am-1:00pm),and a Parade down Main Street in the Town of Church Point (1pm-3:30pm). Until that point individual groups of men would ride horse back through the country on Mardi Gras Day begging for ingredients,or money with which to buy ingredients, for a communal gumbo. We proudly host a " TRADITIONAL " Cajun Mardi Elton Richard first formally organized the Church Point Courir de Mardi Gras in 1961. The first event featured over 400 riders from around Church Point and the Mamou area. The festivity was so large that organizers at the time decided to separate the events by town--one on the Sunday before Mardi Gras and one on Mardi Gras day. Church Point — One of the best. In 1961, representatives from Mamou and Church Point flipped a coin to see who would have their courir on Mardi Gras Day. Mamou won and, since then, Church Point has celebrated a couple of days before, on Sunday. It’s actually a two-day event these days. Saturday is all about the kids. The event was revived in 1968, when it was established that it would be held on the Sunday before Mardi Gras day in order to not interfere with surrounding runs.
