At around 102,000 tons, the Sunshine-class ships are more than 20% smaller than Carnival Panorama and more than 40% smaller than Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. The ships hold from 2,984 to 3,002 passengers, based on double occupancy. Interestingly, these weren't always considered smaller vessels. With Mardi Gras debuting in 2021, sister-ship Carnival Celebration was soon to follow in 2022. Both of these massive cruise ships represent a new era of cruising for Carnival, as most other cruise lines had already built and launched mega ships. Carnival’s Mardi Gras is the line’s first “Excel” class ship, a group of new mega-ships that are the largest in the cruise line’s fleet. Carnival Celebration marks the second Excel-class cruise ship built for Carnival's fleet. A sister to the popular Mardi Gras, the ships mark a push from the cruise line toward vessels that are bigger than the rest of the fleet, carry more people, and offer more to do, see, and eat onboard. And to say that Carnival Celebration is big is an understatement. At 180,000 gross tons, it's Mardi Gras and Celebration are sister ships.. Layout is nearly identical with a few twists here and there to accommodate some flow improvements or design updates. To distinguish any of them in any real way that would matter to your cruise enjoyment would be difficult at best. The first was that Carnival will launch a sister-ship to the upcoming Carnival Mardi Gras in 2022 to coincide with the line’s 50 th birthday. The ship, which will sport a lot of the features of Each of the Excel Class ships has its own distinct theme. This is one of the biggest differentiators between the three sister ships, as the decor is centered around the ship's specific theme. To start, Mardi Gras is designed with New Orleans in mind while Carnival Celebration has a celebration theme to pay homage to Carnival’s history as a MEET THE CEREMONY. We kick off a new ship’s career with a naming ceremony and ours are one part tradition and a lotta parts fun! On the tradition end, we get dignitaries like Mardi Gras' godmother, Miss Dominican Republic Kimberly Jiménez, and our own Chief Fun Officer Shaq to help make sure the champagne bottle gets broken just right for good luck. We also know that the Excel-class ship will have two themed zones unique to that ship, such as The French Quarter on Mardi Gras, 820 Biscayne on Celebration, or Currents on Jubilee, but we don’t know what they are yet.
