NEW ORLEANS — The 2025 Carnival season kicked off on January 6, and Krewe of Proteus is set to roll Uptown in New Orleans on Lundi Gras, Monday Mar. 3. Krewe of Proteus, over the years, throws On Lundi Gras, Monday March 4th, the NOLA.com Mardi Gras for All Y'all Parade Cam broadcast will begin at 5:15 p.m. CST. Leucospermum 'Mardi Gras® Ribbons', a member of the Proteacea family, bursts with vibrant yellow and red blooms in spring, resembling its festive namesake. Plan ahead and avoid streets that intersect with parades. Additional intermittent closures will be necessary as parade elements travel across the city. Carnival’s second oldest parading organization was founded in 1882. Known in Greek mythology as the shepherd of the ocean, Proteus was a god who acted as herdsman of Poseidon’s seals. The old man of the sea possessed the gift of prophecy and the ability to change shape at will. From its first procession, Proteus has presented elaborate parades and tableau balls. In 1893, the men introduced Mardi Gras comes to a close on Tuesday night, and soon, those who celebrate will exclaim “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or “Let the good times roll” for the last time this Carnival season. Why is Mardi Gras so late this year? Because it’s linked to Easter, the date of Mardi Gras can fall anywhere between Feb. 3 and March 9. That’s because Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This year’s date of March 4 is one of the latest possible. Orpheus (Monday before Mardi Gras): Known for creative floats and sought-after throws like four-foot stuffed dragons and custom-decorated tambourines. Zulu (Mardi Gras Day): Beloved for its unique throws, including the iconic hand-decorated coconuts.
