The beads and boobs thing isn't a local thing, it's a tourist thing. It only happens in the French quarter and it's never the boobs anyone wants to see. Parades will throw beads, it's not for boobs though, it's just tradition. They also have some really cool throws at different parades. Mardi Gras Imports, and Mardi Gras Light Ups, LLC, are both in Slidell, and have good prices. MGI is just over the Twin Span, first exit. MGLP LLC is across town, off Hwy 11. There is a new place that opened up in one of the fireworks places, I've not been there yet. I have restrung them as bracelets and will keep for myself or sell (I used to have a shop). People like that they were authentic Mardi Gras beads and will wear a stack of bracelets while being super picky about necklaces. I've also used them in necklaces, sometimes as spacers between larger gemstone beads or with metal ones and metal pendants. The thing to remember when it comes to celebrating Mardi Gras is that flashing for beads isn’t considered a tradition by the locals, so, obviously, you don’t have to feel pressured to do it. Maybe there are particular social groups that participate or help organize Mardi Gras that were either racist at one time, or maybe even still are today.
